Andropause
Testosterone is a hormone secreted by the adrenal glands and testes in men. Testosterone plays a critical role in male reproductive and metabolic functioning. As men pass the age of 30, they begin producing less testosterone, and may experience a generalized decline in their well-being, this is called Andropause. Unlike women, who experience a rapid decline in female hormone production over a short period of time, males usually experience a more gradual decline in hormones. However, men with pre-existing low testosterone to begin with may experience symptoms sooner than expected.
Take The ADAM Questionnaire
The ADAM questionnaire screens for symptoms of low testosterone (Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male).
This questionnaire is an easy way for men to answer questions about their sexual health and to see if they may be experiencing symptoms of low testosterone.
Please answer the following questions:
1. Do you have a decrease in libido (sex drive)?
2. Do you have a lack of energy?
3. Do you have a decrease in strength and/or endurance?
4. Have you lost height?
5. Have you noticed a decreased “enjoyment of life”
6. Are you sad and/or grumpy?
7. Are your erections less strong?
8. Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports?
9. Are you falling asleep after dinner?
10. Has there been a recent deterioration in your work performance?
If you Answer Yes to number 1 or 7 or if you answer Yes to more than 3 questions, you may have low Testosterone.
Signs and Symptoms of Low Testosterone
Unfortunately, symptoms of low testosterone are often perceived as an inevitable part of getting older. These symptoms can lead to changes in our physiology and can affect our quality of life and well-being. Common symptoms include:
-
Low motivation
-
Fatigue
-
Decreased sex drive
-
Decreased quality of erections
-
Decreased strength
-
Depressed mood
-
Stress
-
Brain fog
-
Irritability
-
Loss of muscle mass
-
Slower recovery from work outs
-
Blood sugar dysregulation
The medical community also holds differing opinions on when to initiate testosterone replacement therapy. Typically men are only treated when they have total testosterone <300 ng/dL on bloodwork, an arbitrary number, regardless of symptoms, yet it is the free (unbound) testosterone that the body actually uses.
Total testosterone can range from 300ng/dl to 1100ng/dl, and these numbers largely vary between different labs and are based on population averages, and often unwell individuals.
What do we know about Andropause?
Many men continue to suffer unnecessarily with symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, and low sex drive to name a few. Many symptoms begin to affect work performance, relationships, and overall quality of life.
Whether to treat andropause or low testosterone continues to be a hot topic of debate among the medical community.
What are the benefits of Testosterone Therapy ?

DHEA Dehydroepiandrosterone is a steroid hormone secreted primarily by the adrenal glands. Under normal physiologic conditions, DHEA is an endocrine precursor that is transformed to estrogen and testosterone. Research has shown that DHEA supplementation can improve mood and well-being, memory, sleep, increase energy, restore sexual vitality, maintain bone health, reduce fat mass and maintain lean body mass, and is effective at supporting immune function. DHEA levels peak around 20-24 years of age, and steadily decline at a rate of 2-3% a year. Research has shown that by age 75, men and women have only 10-20% of young adult DHEA levels. Low levels of DHEA has been associated with an increased risk of premenopausal breast and ovarian cancers in women. There is perhaps no better hormone that is associated with youthfulness and aging. Melatonin Melatonin is a natural hormone secreted by the penial gland. It is also synthesized in multiple other non-endocrine organs and tissues. It is the main hormone involved in the control of the sleep-wake cycle. The levels are higher at night, are suppressed by bright light, and decline as we age. Melatonin promotes restful sleep and has an effect on the thermoregulatory and cardiovascular centers. The main role of melatonin both in health and disease is associated with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Thyroid Over 200 symptoms have been reported related to thyroid deficiency! Feeling fatigued, thinning hair and nails, memory issues, increased body fat and difficult losing weight, and a lack of energy and motivation are commonly reported signs and symptoms. Thyroid hormone is a metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland. The two main types of thyroid hormones Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3) control the growth differentiation and metabolism of each cell in the body. They also play critical roles in how our body uses the fuel that we consume, particularly carbohydrates and fat. This helps regulate our temperature and body fat percentage. T4 makes up 80% of our thyroid hormone, yet it is inactive and kept in “reserve”, whereas T3 is the active thyroid hormone, and is 4 times as potent! When the body signals that more thyroid hormone is needed, T4 converts into T3.
Renewed Health Testosterone Replacement program is designed for adult males who have completed family planning, or who do not want to have children, as Testosterone replacement therapy may cause infertility and decreased sperm count while undergoing treatment.
